NATO ascension of Ukraine is pretty far off, as much as its ascension to the EU. The reluctant parties are the Western European states. They see any move from either prospects as a burden and may shift its already challenging relationship with Russia. Ukraine is obviously a strategic buffer state between Russia and NATO. The biggest players in Western Europe like Germany, France etc. Are wary of escalating tensions by admitting Ukraine to NATO, like it did with the Baltic states ascension. On the EU side, Ukraine is still riped with corruption, nationalist far-right sectors that may spell trouble for Western European liberal democracies. So the EU basically is now stating, "Ukraine is not worth it."

It would be interesting to know what would happen if Russian forces were in international waters near the US.
Although it's not that hypothetical because many years ago USSR forces were near the US but not actual in the US territory, remember what the US did when loads of USSR and Cuba teamed up. The US went ballistic.

The human condition is tragic. We are all people with lives and families, in all countries, yet we are willing to blow each other to pieces over something so meaningless. Most of us in the West know very little about Ukraine, and yet a war could start over there, a war which would affect us tremendously.
