Hmm. I wonder if some of the enemies in the first game might have been qlipoth(?). Not sure if it's said as a singular word or plural. Those are supposed to be dirty or evil forces in the Kabbalah. But they're also called husks or shells. I think that's supposed to imply they're lacking some kind of intelligence or they're incomplete? That's what I thought when you mentioned those puddles.
Interesting that first game map is based on the Kabbalah.

Btw you forgot to mention in Kyuuyaku megami tensei 2, if you beaten the first one, you get carry over data that lets you do new stuff like get free exp/money/mag and free demons you can recruit. I used that trick instead of grinding for that game
Once again, the Metroidvania adage holds true: when the game starts, go left first.
Edit: 23:00 I suspect the unknown boss that pursues you may be a hallucination(?) of Izanami, in her undead form. Remember in the movie where Nakajima had visions of a decaying Izanami chasing him? This boss fight might be that.
